Sam Kerr’s run of goals has continued in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, with the Matildas captain scoring in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Portuguese club Benfica.
In her first WCL appearance, Kerr scored Chelsea’s second goal at Kingsmeadow to help the Blues progress to the last 16 of the competition with an 8-0 aggregate win over two legs.
She has now scored five goals in Chelsea’s past three matches in all competitions, including an English Women’s Super League hat-trick against West Ham.
Also progressing to the last 16 with her French club Olympique Lyonnais was Matildas defender Ellie Carpenter, whose side beat Italian outfit Juventus 6-2 on aggregate.
Former Brisbane Roar prodigy Indiah-Paige Riley also enjoyed WCL success, with her Danish team Fortuna Hjorring defeating Slovenia’s Pormuje 3-2 to secure a 6-2 aggregate win.
But the news wasn’t as good for Australians Amy Harrison and Kyah Simon, whose Dutch club PSV Eindhoven were beaten 4-1 by Spanish giants Barcelona.
The easy second-leg win ensured Barcelona progressed to the last 16 with an 8-2 aggregate win.
