Euro 2020 is now over, with Italy crowned champions at the end after a penalty shootout win over England and now attention turns to the consequences for the individual players who excelled themselves.

The transfer window is open and clubs will be looking at the breakthrough stars from the Euros and who could be brought in on a bargain, given their current club situation.

MANUEL LOCATELLI (ITALY)

Current club: Sassuolo

Linked clubs: Juventus, Arsenal

As so often with breakout stars, it’s an injury to a first-team player that gives them the chance to shine. And that was the case with Locatelli.

Marco Verratti’s injury for the first two games gave him the opportunity to showcase his skills and he wasted no time doing so, putting in two great performances against Turkey and Switzerland, scoring twice in the process.

He’s now a European Champion and being linked with a move to the Premier League and Arsenal, who are in desperate need of reinforcements. But it looks like a move to Juventus is the most likely next step for his career.

Locatelli is celebrating now, but has said he will decide his future in the coming days, now the tournament is over.

MIKKEL DAMSGAARD (DENMARK)

Current club: Sampdoria

Linked clubs: Liverpool, Leeds United, Barcelona

Damsgaard was another who took his opportunity, when a Danish reshuffle enforced after the loss of Christian Eriksen meant he was brought into the starting XI.

He scored in the 4-1 demolition of Russia to see the Danes squeeze through and also bagged the only goal direct from a free kick in the semi-final against England. He also put in sterling performances against Wales and Czech Republic.

Understandably, his name is on the lips of many teams, with Liverpool and Leeds the latest two Premier League teams to be linked with him.

It will likely take a bid of around £30m to sign him now Sampdoria know his value is peaking but he could be primed for a big move to the Premier League.

KALVIN PHILLIPS (ENGLAND)

Current club: Leeds United

Linked clubs: Liverpool, Manchester United, Leicester City

He wasn’t in many people’s England XIs at the start of the tournament, but he arguably has become the Three Lions’ first-choice holding midfielder by the end of it.

His non-stop running – only Jorginho ran further than him during the tournament – has kept England going and when both he and Declan Rice were in danger of being suspended for a game, it was he who Gareth Southgate put the most trust in.

The work in improving him that Marcelo Bielsa has put in at Leeds has been evident in his first season in the Premier League but he has proven that he is at home at the highest level and a move could be on the cards.

Manchester United have been linked and are in the market for a holding midfielder, while Leicester City and Liverpool are also reportedly interested.

DENZEL DUMFRIES (NETHERLANDS)

Current club: PSV Eindhoven

Linked clubs: Everton, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan

Dumfries was electric during the Euros as he combined with the speed of Memphis Depay and Donyell Malen and bagged two goals from wing back as he was given licence to attack in the Dutch’s 5-3-2 formation.

Before Euro 2020 had even got underway, the 25-year-old was being courted by Everton, but now some of Europe’s other top clubs have caught wind of him, including Borussia Dortmund, who need a replacement for the Manchester United-bound Jadon Sancho, and Inter Milan, who need to replace Achraf Hakimi on the back of his move to PSG.

Dumfries is PSG captain but is thought to only have a release clause of £15m, meaning he could be one of the bargains of the summer.

ALEXANDER ISAK (SWEDEN)

Current club: Real Sociedad

Linked clubs: Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid

Isak was one of the stars of the group stage, providing a welcome attacking relief to Sweden’s defensively-minded Euro 2020 campaign.

At only 21 years old, his performances made sure that the injury to Zlatan Ibrahimovic was scarcely mentioned and he is viewed by many as a move affordable option to the likes of Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe and reports had suggested that Arsenal had already made contact with his representatives prior to the tournament.

He has signed a new five-year deal at Real Sociedad, who bought out Borussia Dortmund’s £30m buy-back option, and it is understood that his buyout clause has risen from the original £70m as a bidding war could ensue.
